Meet the Team: Jon Trembath

Many of you will have known Jonathan Trembath for many years already, with Jon having qualified as a licenced insolvency practitioner in 2010 with a few years experience already under his belt at that time.

Jon is based in Cornwall with his wife and young family but spent much of his time in Insolvency working in Plymouth and Exeter. He is very well connected across the region through his experience in insolvency but also as part of his role with the Plymouth Round Table and in playing cricket for a local side.

You might have spotted that Jon joined the team at Richard J Smith and Co in 2019 and whilst the pandemic may have stopped Jon from being out and about as much as he might have liked, that hasn’t stopped him from stepping up and joining Hamish and Sam as a partner at the firm in late 2020. Jon is now also taking insolvency appointments.

What is your role at RJS?

I am one of three Partners here at RJS. As well as managing a strong team of colleagues within our insolvency team, I also have my own portfolio of corporate and personal cases. In addition, I provide initial advice to clients, of which our initial advice is free of charge.

I also like to get out and socialise and network with contacts such as accountants, solicitors and lenders.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, going on holiday, attending local music festivals, socialising with friends and also fund raising with the Plymouth Round Table for local worthy causes. I also enjoy playing and watching most sports, in particular cricket and football.

Having initially trained at an independent insolvency practice before moving on to spending 7 years at a National practice, when the prospect came up to join RJS, I could not resist the opportunity. RJS have organically built up a very strong reputation over the last 30+ years within the South West and we are well positioned to continue this over the next 30 years.

Something that people might not know about you?

When I qualified as an Insolvency Practitioner in 2010, at the time, I became one of the youngest IPs in the Country.   

Favourite case/work story?

The rescue of a waste management company (turnover more than £10m pa) through a Pre-Pack Administration to an unconnected third party, resulting in more than 90 local employee jobs being saved and the Secured and Preferential creditors being paid in full. We also managed to pay a reasonable dividend to Unsecured creditors. Given the challenges of the case, the secured creditor (owed > £2.5m) initially forecast that they would receive very little, if any, return from the insolvency procedure. As you can imagine, it was very satisfying to achieve the result we did given the circumstances.

What would your last meal be?

Fillet steak with all the trimmings!
